Formerly incarcerated youths can benefit from your sponsorship. Incarcerated youths usually leave prison with a high level of anxiety because they don’t have a place to live, eat, have no finances, or have no support network.

Wilfredo had impeccable attendance, was always on time, and gave outstanding effort in this program, completing all of the certifications offered. While he was in the program, he was also employed in a management position and was able to successfully juggle work and training, demonstrating great perseverance. He was a leader in the group, being able to offer suggestions and strategies to other participants on how to obtain and maintain employment. I believe that to the best of my ability, I can state that Mr. Wilfredo Sanchez is on the road to success for himself, his family, and others-and is already contributing to his community.
Center for Latino Progress: Kimberly Flint – Programs Director
Mr. Sanchez is a student in ENet (Entrepreneurial Network) program at the University. ENet program is a specially designed program, funded through a grant, to provide individuals with a past incarceration with the academic and practical knowledge to start their own business. I have read all of Mr. Sanchez’s assignments around communication and can tell you that this is a gentleman that is working hard to better himself and takes self-improvement extremely seriously. During his time in the ENet program Wilfredo has proven time and time again that he wants to improve his life and his circumstances. He has shown up for every aspect of the program and proves to be a valuable member of the cohort. As part of the program each participant, along with the academics is required to be involved in a mentorship program. After completion of his own program, I was so impressed with Mr. Sanchez that I hired him as a mentor for the next cohort of students. Wilfredo showed for all of his mentoring responsibilities and took his role seriously, providing both emotional and academic support to students in the program.

I have witnessed Mr. Sanchez’s journey from incarceration to contributing member of society, and I stand in awe of his determination to succeed and his ability to overcome pitfalls and obstacles as he maneuvers toward his goals. Wilfredo and I had regular contact and he consistently exhibited strong resolve and solid follow-through. Wilfredo remains focused and has accomplished all his goals to date, seeking assistance as needed while using resourcefulness. I am always impressed by his positive attitude, his ability to identify and participate in programs, and his willingness to do whatever it takes to move forward.

Wilfredo has shown me to be both enthusiastic and focused on creating for himself and his community. Throughout our course, Wilfredo showed himself to be one of the rare students who accepts the teacher’s – me in this case – open invitation for individual, out-of-class help. I been direct witness to the self-motivated Wilfredo whose discipline and focus was clearly obvious and easily distinguishable from the masses; Wilfredo has been a standout. And it is this impression of Wilfredo’s investment in GEMS that makes me confident about his purposeful enrichment of his community. I celebrate his Janusian approach to build an organization that not only serves who he may have been but also builds upon who he is now. Wilfredo’s current trajectory to help formerly incarcerated persons connect with the resources necessary for their individual success.

I have had the pleasure of knowing Wilfredo Sanchez for over twenty-years. He’s demonstrated many capacities. He is an enthusiastic, compassionate, and positive individual who looks out for everyone’s interest more than his own. As a single mother, raising a teenager in the city of Hartford has been a challenge. I was having serious issues with my son due to many variables such as self-esteem and depression. Wilfredo was able to sit and listen to my son, understand his struggles as a young man in Hartford and able to provide constructive feedback. Wilfredo’s compassionate words, leadership and guidance assisted my son changing his perspective in life. My son is now enrolled in the DJ program offered by the Hispanic Health Council and is viewing life differently, thanks to Mr. Sanchez. Wilfredo has so much to offer our youth and this world. There is no doubt in my mind that Mr. Sanchez will continue to be an influential and driving force in our community.
